Niemirover, Jacob Israel
(1872-1939)
   Romanian chief rabbi. He was born in Lemberg, and served as rabbi of Jassy. He became rabbi of the Sephardi community of Bucharest in 1911 and later chief rabbi of Romania. In 1926 he was elected to the Romanian senate, where he served as the repre-sentative of Romanian Jewry. Active in educational and Zionist circles, he also served as president of the order of B'nai B'rith in Romania. He wrote studies of various Jewish topics.
